European Renewable Energy Sources Champions League - Solar and Biomass League in Hungary

The Renewble Energy Sources Champions League is a network of national RES leagues, which aims at creating a positive renewable energy competition between European cities, towns and villages with participation of 7 European countries. In Hungary, the Solar League (Napkorona Bajnokság) is running from 02-2009. This is the  second season of Solar League, currently with participation of 120 municipalities form the country. This is the gratest independent campaign for popularizing solar energy use in the country! The program is not only a competition between municipalities pioneering in using solar energy in 3 cathegories, but as an organiser, ENERGIAKLUB is willing to help municipalities with free conferences and information materials about best practises in solar energy use.

In the frame of RES Champions League, the Hungarian Biomass League has been organised by ENERGIAKLUB for the season 2010-11, with participation of municipalities with decentralized, sustainable biomass heating systems for public use. Regarding the problems with sustainability of biomass utilisation in Hungary, we collected the sustainability criterias for participating the competition.

Type:

municipalities

Description:

What are the principles of the Suncrown Championship (Solar League)?

  • index: based on installed power (or area) per inhabitant
  • solar energy (photovoltaic and thermal) used in the settlement (public and private)

The current season of the Hungarian Solar League is from November 2010 to 15th April 2011. The champions are cities, towns and villages, which are at the top of the main rankings and subrankings, at general ranking or in their own division, at the end of the season. A Special Price of the Jury is awarded every year to a local authority for the exemplarity of his energy policy. The Jury is composed of  professional partners of the Hungarian RES League.

Sustainability criterias for Biomass League in Hungary:

The basic criteria that have to be fulfilled by all participants of the Biomass League in Hungary. The sustainable energetic utilization of biomass can be carried out only:

-         by using biomass that is locally available,

-         if the scale of utilization is based on the local heat demand,

-         if the utilization happens in a decentralised way.

Capacity: the capacity of the facility is sized for covering the local heat demand, but it does not exceed 20 MW total capacity

Acquisition of raw material:

1.      basically locally available raw materials are used, and the by-products of wood industry and firewood are used only as supplementary materials

2.      the origin of the raw material is proven (way-bill is necessary)

3.      the maximum length of raw material transport is 50 km

-         in the case of biogas production it is important to have an appropriate amount of local raw material and local storing capacity, and the produced heat has to be used locally

Those facilities are excluded from the competition, which:

-         produce electricity from biomass without heat utilization

-         use co-firing technologies (coal + wood burning together)
